The revenue department has set the ball rolling on Bangalore’s ambitious Urban Property Ownership Records project. The project envisages replacing khatas, regarded as a crucial document to establish property ownership, with unique property identification numbers.
On Thursday, the department held first round of discussions with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), Hyderabad, in connection with the project.
The NRSC will employ geo-referencing through remote sensing to create transparent urban property ownership records. “Geo-referencing through remote sensing is expected to help us identify encroachments of government land or illegal structures and such things. We will create unique property records for one-third of the city by a year in the first phase of the programme,” said Rajeev Chawla, principal secretary, revenue department. Sixty-five of the 198 BBMP wards will be covered under the first phase of the project.
