Tap IT hubs to mop up revenue: corporator

Cash-strapped BBMP must look at IT hubs for revenue mobilization. This suggestion came from Yediyur corporator NR Ramesh on Wednesday.

Raising the issue at the council meeting, he said Rs 700 crore could be mobilized by assessing the Information Technology (IT) and Business Parks structures within BBMP limits.
“Under the Self-Assessment Scheme (SAS), the IT companies have paid tax for 69 lakh sqfeet, whereas their actual occupancy is in a total area of 3.5 crore sqfeet as per market research surveys. As per BBMP’s revenue wing, there are only 13 IT parks in the Palike limits and BBMP gets Rs 60.97 crore from them. But in reality, there are 22 such IT hubs and business parks. BBMP has issued 130 building plans and among them 89 have been given occupancy certificate,” Ramesh said.
He also suggested that the mayor and commissioner conduct a survey of IT companies through Electronic Total Station (ETS) equipment that costs Rs 5 lakh per piece. “ETS helps in the scientific and electronic measuring of all the IT and business park properties
in all the eight zones,” he said.
Responding to this, BBMP commissioner M K Shankarlinge Gowda said that the state government has already started working on Urban Property Ownership Register to accurately measure the number and extent of all the
buildings in the city.
On Optical Fibre Cables, the commissioner said: "The OFC companies must pay the ground rent of Rs 120 per running meter, failing which the cables will be disconnected. The drive is already on.''

TENDER CHARGE: Pointing out the delay in awarding the garbage collection tenders, JD-S leader Padmanabh Reddy said he is ready to file a suit against the mayor and the commissioner for the sad state of solid waste management. "BBMP has called for tenders of garbage collection five times. No contractor has come forward for bidding due to the unusual conditions in the tender notification. This is because the same parties are in power in both BBMP and in state government,'' he said.
