Over 100 Koramangala residents on Monday staged a protest against BDA’s commencement of work on four underpasses along a 4-km stretch on Sarjapur Road between Madiwala and Agara. This, without keeping citizens in the loop.
The demonstration was held at Aishwarya junction, near Krupanidhi College on Sarjapur Road, where one of the underpasses is coming up. The total project cost is Rs 125 crore. The work was stopped following the protest.
Residents were upset that the project would result in the cutting of 150 trees and disrupt life. They have threatened to move court if BDA persisted with the “illconceived project”.
A year ago, Sarjapur Road was widened to 100 feet to accommodate traffic which was diverted from Hosur Road. Residents said the BDA is now citing busy traffic on Sarjapur Road as the reason to build underpasses. They said BBMP has proposed to construct underpasses on Hosur Road and BDA should wait till the Palike finishes that work.
“The BDA hasn’t shared with us the related traffic and environment studies despite our filing an RTI for the same,” said Koramangala resident Vijayan Menon.
Monday’s protest was the third time that Koramangala residents have hit the road against the issue.
